Chaitra Navratri & Gudi Padwa – A New Beginnings with Divine Blessings


As Chaitra month (Chaitra means the first month of Hindu Lunar calendar) begins, Hindus welcome two auspicious festivals – Chaitra Navratri and Gudi Padwa (Hindu New Year- celebrated with different Names in Different states across the Nation), both symbolizing devotion, prosperity with new beginnings.

Chaitra Navratri – Nine Days of Divine Energy and Maa’s blessings

Chaitra Navratri (Vasant Navratri) is dedicated to Maa Durga and her divine nine forms, guiding us towards spiritual awakening and inner strength. It is also significant as the birth anniversary of Lord Sri Rama, celebrated as Ram Navami that is on the ninth day of Navratri. People observe fasts, perform pujas, chant mantras, and seek blessings from Maa Durga for a harmonious life.

Gudi Padwa/ Ugadi – The New Year (according to Hindu Lunar Calendar)

Gudi Padwa, also known as Samvatsar Padvo, Ugadi, Padvo, yugadi, Yugadi, Cheti Chand or Navreh  In the northeastern state of Manipur, it's known as Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba . This festival marking the beginning of the new year, is rooted in multiple stories and traditions, including the creation of the universe by Lord Brahma, the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya, and the victory of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Many consider this day as auspicious to buy new things especially gold or a new vehicle.  People decorate their houses with rangoli to invite prosperity and good fortune. Special delicacies like Puran Poli and Shrikhand-Puri, Halwa( sweets made with jaggery  are enjoyed.
