Om Namah Shivaya!
Tomorrow is Mahashivratri. It is not just a religious festival but a beautiful way and opportunity for parents to connect our children with our rich cultural and spiritual heritage. In today’s world, it becomes essential to instill a deep sense of pride in our traditions.
Here are a few ways to help children embrace Indian culture while celebrating Maha Shivratri:
1. Storytelling & Mythology – Fascinating stories about Lord Shiva, his divine powers, and the significance of Maha Shivratri. Narrating stories like the marriage of Shiva ji and Parvati ji or how lord shiva got his name as Neelkanth, his cosmic dance, his third eye and many stories will spark curiosity and help kids understand the essence of devotion and righteousness.
2. Shiva Bhajans & Chanting – Introduce children to the powerful vibrations of ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, Mahamrutyunjay mantra and soulful Shiva bhajans. This can be a fun way to engage them in spiritual learning while developing an appreciation for Indian devotional music. Today many young singers are singing catchy devotional songs which attracts this generation.
3. Art & Craft Activities – Encourage kids to create simple art related to Lord Shiva, such as clay art, drawings of his damru, trishul, or Shiva Lingam. Making paper models or clay sculptures can be a creative way to engage them with cultural symbols. And enlightening them with the hidden meanings behind these symbols.
4. Fasting & Sattvic Food – Explain the significance of fasting and how it helps in self-discipline. If children are too young to fast, involve them in preparing sattvic foods like fruits, milk-based sweets, or traditional recipes like sabudana khichdi.
5. Temple Visits & Rituals – Take children to a Shiva temple and let them witness the rituals like abhishekam and aarti. Observing devotees and participating in pujas can leave a lasting impression on young minds about the beauty of Indian traditions.
By celebrating Maha Shivratri meaningfully, we can sow the seeds of cultural awareness and spirituality in our children, ensuring that they cherish and carry forward India’s timeless traditions with pride.
